Exhibition Introduction

A life with hope is bright and cheerful    because there is joy.

In places where hope springs forth, smiling faces bloom like perfumed flowers     because there is a future.

Themed “Blossom of Hope,” the 11th SGM art collection exhibition features flowers as its primary subject, melding diverse mediums like paintings, floral art, and spatial installations. This fusion results in a rich tapestry of art forms and conceptual intersections. The exhibition is sectioned into four thematic zones: “Spring,” “Summer,” “Autumn,” and “Winter”, offering visitors an immersive visual journey that delves into the essence of the theme.

In nature, flowers bloom in every nook and cranny, even in the most unexpected locales, exuding their unique charm and vitality. While a beautiful flower may garner instant appreciation from onlookers, artists delve deeper. They not only scrutinise the diversity and characteristics of flowers but also embark on a profound exploration of life itself. In doing so, they infuse flowers with emotion, poetry, and rich symbolism.

This exhibition features an extensive range of artworks, comprising 40 pieces by artists from Malaysia, South Korea, China, and Hong Kong. These pieces span a range of mediums, including Chinese ink paintings, oil paintings, prints, lacquer works, and fine brush works. By featuring artists from various eras and countries, the exhibition highlights the diverse beauty and interpretations of “flowers” in their creations, unveiling a rich tapestry of artistic styles and perspectives on nature and life.

The “Spring” section, which full of vitality and energy, features Malaysian artist Yap Hong Ngee, Chinese artists Qiu Shoucheng, Yang Zhiguang, Xie Zhiguang, Zhang Shoucheng, Zheng Naiguang, Pu Jiansheng, Jiang Caiping and Korean artist Chin Kwan Hwi.

While the splendour and passionate “Summer” section, features Malaysian artists Lee Kah Yeow, Lee Hai Peng and printmaker Loo Foh Sang, Chinese lacquer artist Zheng Yikun, artists Wang Yu, Yang Ruifen, Jiang Caiping, and Hong Kong artist Connie Ho Shun-Yiu.

The “Autumn” section features Chinese artists Zhu Qizhan, Zhu Lesan and Guo Dawei, who are dedicated to the modernisation of Chinese ink painting. This section also features Xie Gongzhan, who is renowned for his painting on chrysanthemum, Chinese ink artist Ma Xiyuan and Wang Jiuxing who paint in Chinese meticulous style.

Winter heralds the blooming of plum blossoms, symbolising virtues of fearlessness and unwavering perseverance against the biting cold. This flower has long been a cherished subject among Chinese ink painting artists spanning various eras. This section showcases eight distinct plum blossom artworks, each radiating its unique allure, including a piece by Huang Yongyu, revered as a national treasure in China; red plum blossoms by Lu Yanshao, Huang Yanghui, Li Bingqi, Wang Geyi and Pu Jiansheng that weave modern aesthetics into traditional techniques; the works by literati artist Pu Ru, and Venerable Bo Yuan, an eminent Buddhist monk from China.

Three budding Malaysian architects — Lee Chun Jie, Mechelle Yeoh Kai Wen, and Chan Kang Neng — have collaborated on an art installation that introduces an interactive space, displaying 10 still-life flower paintings by Bai Qu. While flowers in vases are often seen as representations of “fleeting and ephemeral beauty” in Western art traditions, their presentation in this interactive setting reimagines them, turning the space into a symbol of hope and eternal blessings.

Another trio of floral artists — Elly Lam Wai Lee, Celeste Low Yi Tian, and Carol Chong Chu Xing — innovatively combine floral art and three-dimensional space with modern aesthetics, creating three large-scale floral artworks, presenting an unconventional aesthetic experience.

Through this exhibition of masterpieces, we aspire to foster a deeper appreciation for the fusion of art and life, especially in the aftermath of the pandemic. Moreover, we aim to inspire deeper reflections on life, enrich our spiritual journeys, and instil a renewed sense of joy and unwavering hope by delving into the artistry of these floral exhibits. For we are steadfast in our belief that hope is the force that beckons a brighter tomorrow.
