Exhibition Introduction
Curator Ong Chia Koon

In the blink of an eye, the Cao Tang Men Eastern Arts Society has been established for twenty years. Over these two decades, we have weathered storms and enjoyed sunshine together. Looking back on our journey, I feel deeply moved. This time, our member exhibition is held without the presence of Dr Cheah. Yet his spirit and philosophy continue to live on within each of us through our brush and ink works.

The theme of this exhibition, “Nanyang New Horizons” was proposed by Tai Boon Piow. “Nanyang” represents our shared conviction and pursuit, while “New Horizons” signifies our vision and innovative breakthroughs for the future. For two decades, Cao Tang Men has steadfastly upheld the philosophy championed by Dr Cheah—advancing the local development of ink painting, allowing brush and ink to take root and flourish on this southern land (Nanyang Region).

We aspire for ink painting to transcend its role as an East Asian cultural symbol and instead embody the unique character of Southeast Asia. The light, heat, sounds, climate, and human warmth of this land should all become the raw material and soul of our creations.

In this exhibition, we witness many fellow artists diligently exploring new subjects and expressive techniques. Whether in the works by May Meng, Thim Choy, Siaw Choo, Jin Toh, or Boon Piow, one can sense this fresh artistic direction. Ink painting is not merely a dialogue between brush and ink; it is a profound engagement with life, land, and the spirit of our times. Thus, this exhibition not only carries forward the spirit of “Nanyang” but also seeks to discover new languages and perspectives within tradition. We aim for ink painting to reveal its unique character and charm within the cultural and environmental context of Southeast Asia. We do not seek to be avant-garde; we simply strive for sincere creation. We do not pursue extravagant forms; we only hope our brush and ink stay expressive and carry genuine emotion.

May this exhibition herald a new chapter for Cao Tang Men, allowing fellow enthusiasts and mentors to witness our dedication, while showing the next generation that Cao Tang Men’s reverence for and continuation of the commitment to “Nanyang” is both a conviction and a practice.

The southern wind of Nanyang still blows, new horizons have opened. Let us wield our brushes as wind and our hearts as landscapes, continuing to inscribe the pictorial spirit and essence of our southern land.
