Exhibition Introduction

What is peace?

Perhaps the best way to begin is by asking a child:

  •       “Which colour would you associate with peace? ”
  •       “If peace could talk, what would it tell you?”

The child´s answers may often be unexpected, sometimes bringing a smile to our faces.

For adults, peace might seem as an ideal state or as a distant global issue featured in the news. For children, it is something experienced in everyday life, such as laughing on the playground after school, hearing a bedtime story from their mother, or holding hands again after a scuffle with a friend.

“Children are the hope of the future” is a common saying, but in reality, they are active and perceptive members of today’s society.  Their feelings, observations, and imaginations represent a microcosm of the world we are in today. They are not “future adults,” but whole and complete human beings living in the present moment.

As Gandhi said, “if we are to reach real peace in this world, we shall have to begin with children”. To understand peace, we must first listen to what children have to say.

Yet not every child can or wishes to express themselves in words. In such moments, art becomes a natural conduit for them to connect with the world because it is a universal form of human expression that transcends the barrier of language.

In art, there are no right or wrong answers, nor fixed standards. The sky can be red, candy may grow on trees, and the sun may sing. Through the children´s drawings, we are able to enter into their small universe of creativity, thought and emotion.

This year’s “Ta-da! Look at My Lines! Children’s Peace Art Exhibition 2025”, organised by HARMONI Soka Art and Culture, showcases 150 works by children aged between 4 to 15 from nine associations and institutions. The exhibition, centred on the theme of peace, is divided into five sections, each offering a glimpse of the world as seen through children’s eyes.

(1) My Happiest Time of the Day

Swinging on the playground, watching little fishes swim, or hearing a friend say, “I’ll come to play with you today.” Simple joys are the most genuine and moving. These paintings capture the brightest moments in a child’s life.

(2) A Place That Makes Me Feel Secure

Listening to the rain by the window, lying on a sun-warmed pillow, or resting by the night lamp in the bedroom… Each drawing represents a small, personal sanctuary.

(3) Little Worries in My Heart

Forgetting homework, a friend ignoring me, or accidentally breaking something — these little worries are probably things that many of us remember from our childhood.

(4) If I Have Magic Power

Turning clouds into trampolines, letting roads sprout rainbows, or transforming tears into showers of candy… Imagination knows no bounds, creating worlds of play and wonder.

(5) My Friends and I

“You draw with me, and I play hide-and-seek with you.” Friendship makes the world feel less lonely and so much more joyful.  These drawings are the map of their friendships.

These works remind us that peace cannot be defined by a single answer. It is diverse and multifaceted. Each child’s drawing is a unique voice and perspective of the world. Coming from different cultures and experiences—some facing hardships, some growing up in multicultural communities—these differences allow every piece to shine in its own light and stand in its own right.

Imagine peace as a big jigsaw puzzle, where each piece of the jigsaw is created by a child. If we listen only to one voice or view from a single perspective, our understanding of peace will always be incomplete. Only when we are willing to listen and weave together different perspectives, can we start to see the true complete picture.

We invite you to set aside the “adult perspective” and approach the exhibition with both care and curiosity. Every child who is being heard becomes a seed for future peace. Their colours and lines are both questions about the future and answers in themselves.

Let us accompany our children as they grow, and together we safeguard their colourful dreams of a peaceful world. This is the most precious gift we can give to the world.
