The flowering of art in Malaysia developed since Western colonisation and the arrival of Chinese immigrants to Southeast Asia. Preserving its rich tropical characteristics and native culture, whilst absorbing the essence of Western art techniques and combining that with the spirit of the Orient, the Art of Malaysia has converged to form its distinctive and exquisite style.

Consequently, we find a rich range of mediums and cultural expressions in Malaysian art that accentuates the “beauty of harmony in diversity.” The subjects and content of artworks are easily recognisable and feels somewhat endearing and close to our “past,” “present” and even “future.”

The Art of Malaysia: Selection of SGM Art Collection exhibition consists of specially selected works of eight local artists, namely Fatimah Chik, Fung Yow Chork, Sharifah Fatimah Syed Zubir, Khalil Ibrahim, Cheah Thien Soong, Choong Kam Kow, Tan Tong and Syed Thajudeen.
