Twenty years ago, Soka Gakkai Malaysia held the first Yap Hong Ngee exhibition, “Yap Hong Ngee, Jane Yap — Father and Daughter Art Exhibition,” at Wisma Kebudayaan SGM. Teacher Yap Hong Ngee was 60 years old at that time.

On May 18, 2013, we organised the “Dots•Lines•Circles — Art Dialogue between Yap Hong Ngee & Jane Yap Jian Yi” exhibition at Wisma Kebudayaan SGM, celebrating the 70th birthday of Teacher Yap.

After 11 years, on May 18, 2024, we are once again collaborating  to present “TRANSFORMAT108N — Ripples 2.0: Yap Hong Ngee Solo Exhibition & The 18th Our World Exhibition”. This exhibition aims to showcase Teacher Yap Hong Ngee’s aspirations and breakthroughs in creativity, marking a new chapter as he enters his 80s. 

This exhibition showcases Teacher Yap Hong Ngee’s reflections and realisations on life and humanity during the COVID-19 pandemic. He transforms these insights into creative inspirations, integrating them into his artworks one after another.

“Like a stone thrown into water, stirring ripples” – this is the core concept of this exhibition.

A small stone may seem insignificant to some, but  when it is gently thrown into the water, it releases incredible energy, creating layers of ripples that expand with a gentle breeze. Similarly, each of us is like a stone, seemingly small, yet our every action holds infinite power, capable of creating waves of kindness that can influence everyone around us.

With this in mind, Teacher Yap Hong Ngee initiated a creative project titled “Stones”, inviting 108 students of various ages from Jane Yap Atelier to participate in its creation. This project aimed to spark artistic practice by encouraging the participants to contribute their own ideas and efforts. He prepared over a hundred canvases (15×15 cm) with small stones drawn on them for the young artists, and then “tossing” them to the young artists for further creation. As a result, the 108 artists demonstrated their rich imagination and creativity, turning simple stones into countless imaginative scenes and new media artworks. This exchange and collaboration among artists of different generations showcase  diverse results in artistic thinking, achieving the effect of “one stone, endless possibilities”!

As Teacher Yap Hong Ngee tosses a small stone into the pond, each artist’s artwork resembles layers of ripples on the water’s surface. This mutual inspiration, collaboration and exchange not only ignite sparks of creativity between teacher and students, but also continually push them to surpass themselves in the process of collective exploration, becoming sources of mutual growth. This is also the original intention behind Jane Yap Atelier’s consistent hosting of  the “Our World Exhibition” since 1998.

Finally, echoing Teacher Yap Hong Ngee’s expectations for this exhibition, we aim to offer an exhibition that reflects creative richness , innovative breakthroughs, and profound significance.
