Exhibition Introduction

Co-curators: Richard Wong & Foo Keh Chong

Wassily Kandinsky, a pioneer of abstract art, once pointed out that one should focus on the colours, expressive techniques, and language of art — all stemming from the artist’s “inner necessity”. Abstract art embodies precisely this spirit, transforming reality beyond the confines of figurative representation. It no longer adheres to the reproduction of external forms but, instead, presents the flow of human emotions and spiritual depth through the interplay of painting elements such as lines, colours, and shapes.

Since its emergence in the early 20th century, abstract art has evolved into one of the most significant movements in modern art, symbolising humanity’s pursuit of spirituality and freedom. If figurative art recreates the outer appearance of the world, then abstract art seeks to touch the world’s “heartbeat”— evoking our perception of life’s depth and essence through the intangible.

The International Abstract Art Exhibition – 2025 Malaysia is jointly organised by Soka Gakkai Malaysia’s Harmoni Soka Art & Culture and the Malaysian Modern & Contemporary Art Academy (MCAA), with the Asia International Artists Alliance (AIAA) as co-organiser.
The exhibition brings together works by 34 artists from across Asia, including China, Japan, South Korea, Mongolia, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam; Hungary from Europe; and Cuba and Uruguay from the Americas. It also specially showcases,13 artworks from the Soka Gakkai Malaysia’s art collection, presenting a total of 62 remarkable creations that collectively form a rich and diverse visual feast.

The participating artists, influenced by their unique cultural roots and life experiences, express their perceptions of existence and life’s questions through their own artistic languages. Their use of colours and lines resembles silent poetry — some inspired by nature’s scenery and the flow of the wind, others originating from dreams and inner reflections. Here, their works come together, interact, and resonate, collectively unfolding a spiritual landscape that transcends borders and language. Without boundaries, beyond right or wrong, only the resonance of reason and emotion remains. This event goes beyond that of a simple art exhibition; it serves as an artistic dialogue, and more profoundly, an encounter of the spirit.

The exhibition’s flow mirrors a personal inner journey of exploration — beginning with the rational order of geometry, traversing the eruption of emotion and the rhythm of colour, and arriving at the subtlety and grace of Eastern ink wash. We hope viewers will not only appreciate the aesthetic beauty of abstract art but also grasp its inherent depth and meaning. Abstract art is not “incomprehensible art”, but rather an “invitation” — an invitation to feel its rhythms, structures, and emotions with our hearts. Simultaneously, it guides us to listen to our inner voices, inspiring us to perceive and express our own emotions and thoughts. Whether it’s the surging of emotions, the flow of thoughts, or moments of stillness, these are profound and authentic ways we connect with life and art.

As you approach the exhibition’s conclusion and look back at the work echoing the opening, you may discover — we seem to have returned to the beginning, yet something inside us has subtly transformed. May the perception ignited by art continue to illuminate every present moment of your life.

Abstract art is the language of the soul’s freedom. May every viewer discover their own rhythm and resonance within this world woven of colour and line, sensing the flow of life and the authenticity of the present moment between the tangible and the intangible.
